After
capturing an image with my old Polaroid cameras, I use
my hands and eyes to manipulate film emulsion, which
remains pliant for 12 hours. Photography has been my
backbone since I was 12, always convincing my Dad to
give me his old cameras. I also painted as a child, which
has remained a lifetime unrequited love. Both media by
themselves left me longing, but combining them brings
fulfillment. The immediacy of natural light and my camera,
the magic of emulsion and its limited time frame has
become for me the perfect recipe for expression.

Dundee Murray was born
in 1957 in San Antonio, Texas. She spent many of her
earlier years working with old cameras from her father’s
ostentatious collection. Many hot Texas afternoons were
spent in life drawing, painting and craft classes at
The McNay Art Institute, and her college years majoring
in art at Trinity University, Antioch College, and The
University of California in Santa Cruz.
In 1979 Dundee began a career in film, assisting commercial
photographers in Austin and San Antonio. Her experience
over the years eventually led to a studio management
position with Cardellino Commercial Photography. Here
she was able to finely tune a variety of talents that
eventually would develop into a career working in the
major motion picture industry. Dundee spent the next
18 years working with different film companies, such
as, Disney Pictures, New Line Cinema, Paramount Pictures,
and Universal, freelancing as a Location Manager or Production
Coordinator/ Manager.
Dundee had a great impact on the overall development
of the film industry in South Central Texas. She helped
form The Production Associates of San Antonio, and served
a term as Vice President in 1989. She then went on to
serve as a regional officer, representing the San Antonio
sector for The Texas Association of Film and Tape Professionals.
It was her most recent job in an archival photographic
studio and film lab that would ultimately catapult Dundee
into her perfect medium.
Her art combines photography and painting, using Polaroid
photographs that are then manipulated before the emulsion
dries. Dundee uses natural light, a camera, and the
magic of limited-time emulsions to create beautiful,
provoking imagery. Dundee currently resides in Austin,
Texas. We can all benefit now from her newly discovered
niche, as this artist has begun her ascent towards deserved
recognition.
